Value Line
This strategy is good for making students use critical thinking skills to evaluate their position on a topic . It gets the students up and out of their seat, which promotes engagement. The teacher can use it as a quick check to see
how the class feels about a certain issue or gauge interest.
The teacher may have to put up signs saying “Strongly agree” on one side and “Strongly Disagree” on the other end. Depending on the level of the class additional signs may be necessary, such as “mildly agree,” “agree” and so on.
Step 1- The teacher presents a question or issue to the class.
Step 2- The teacher asks students to think about how they feel about the issue.
Step 3- The teacher asks students to line up according to their opinion.
Step 4- Have students form groups of three with people opposite to them on the line and talk about why they selected the position they did.
Step 5 -When everyone has selected a position, ask students to look and analyze “figure out” where the class stands on the issue. Have a whole group discussion.
Note- other options for step 4 *Form homogeneous groups from
sections of the line and discuss or find information that supports their
position.
