Kagan Cooperative Learning
Kagan Structures are scientifically research based as well as backed by classroom evidence from districts, schools, and teachers experiencing success with Kagan. Advantages of cooperative learning include the following; it builds social skills, it's motivating, encouraging, engaging, provides immediate feedback encouragement, and boosts self -esteem.
Kagan’s theory contains 7 key concepts.
The seven concepts are as follows;
1. Structures – the way the teacher organizes the information.
2. Teams – when and how to form and reform types of teams, for example, heterogeneous, random, student selected, or homogeneous.
3. Management – creating the context for cooperation; managing noise, attention, time, materials, and
energy.
4. Class building – the process that makes the class of individuals into a community of active
learners.
5. Teambuilding –what class building is to a class this is to teams or pairs.
6. Social Skills –life skills, critical for success in workplace, family life, and other positive interactions.
7. Basic Principles (PIES) -
P- Positive interdependence, provide formative feedback
I-Individual accountability
E-Equal Participation
S- Simultaneous Interaction
